Bringing Virtualization to Networks with MontaVista's Virtual Resource Manager

MontaVista's 7th Generation of Linux Technology Brings the Choice of Multiple Virtualization Options that Provides Solutions for Legacy Applications and Future Requirements

Barcelona, Spain, February 27, 2012 – MontaVista® Software, LLC, a leader in embedded Linux® commercialization services, today announced MontaVista Linux – VRM (Virtual Resource Manager), a highly scalable virtualized Linux environment for the network infrastructure market. By the end of 2015, annual global IP traffic will increase four-fold from 2010, reaching 966 Exabyte per year and mobile traffic will increase 26-fold, according to the Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI). Providers of these Next-Generation Networks are being challenged to handle this explosive increase in traffic because of the rapid adoption of cloud technology and increased mobile broadband capacity, as well as the growth in the exchange and sharing of multimedia and video rich content. Network equipment providers will need a dynamic, high performance, and secure software platform that provides the portability they need to scale their networks to meet this challenge.

MontaVista’s 7th generation Linux technology, MVL-VRM, is designed to meet the demands of the virtualized network, providing application portability, dynamic configuration, and real-time performance in a single platform. VRM provides solutions for legacy migration, asynchronous multi-processing high performance Bare Metal Engine, and NSA level secure environment for 3rd party applications. VRM is a suite of “Carrier-class” virtualization technologies (Real-Time KVM, Secure Containers, and Bare Metal Engine) providing the most flexible architecture for deploying a range of virtual appliances.

These Virtual Appliances are pre-built, pre-configured, and ready to run application solutions that may, or may not, contain an OS. A virtual appliance can range from an application with a para-virutalized OS to a basic application stack specifically configured to run in a virtual environment. With MontaVista’s VRM multiple use cases can run on a single secure platform that can be dynamically reconfigured to meet the changing demands of the network. Virtual appliances can be built from existing or new applications, so whether moving off a legacy RTOS or writing a new application, VRM provides the means to greater portability of all your software in the virtual network.

“This generation of MontaVista’s Linux delivers the most flexible and dynamic environment for developing new network devices. The concept of Virtual Appliances has been around for several years but MontaVista is the only company applying it to a pure Embedded Linux environment,” said Jim Ready, CTO of MontaVista, “VRM has the most options for an embedded solution available today.”

MontaVista Linux – VRM is the 7th generation of Linux commercialization and innovation for the network infrastructure market and is available on all major architectures. For more details register here for an upcoming webinar on March 8th 2012.
