MontaVista and Rightware Partner to Create Automotive In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI)
Solutions for Embedded Linux

Joint Solution will be demonstrated at Telematics Update Detroit June 8th – 9th

Santa Clara, California and Espoo, Finland – June 7, 2011 – MontaVista® Software LLC, a leader in embedded Linux® commercialization, and Rightware Oy, the leader in embedded 3D user interface (UI) technologies announced today a strategic partnership and enablement of Rightware’s flagship 3D user interface product - Kanzi® UI Solution running on top of a GENIVI compliant MontaVista Linux platform. This global partnership will provide compelling solution for automotive industry customers.

With the growing sophistication and complexity of automotive infotainment systems, the software requirements are very similar to the mobile device requirements with the quality and support needs of the telecom carrier world. MontaVista brings over 11 years of experience in developing high quality embedded Linux solutions with millions of devices running MontaVista Linux in smart phones, consumer electronics, office automation devices, medical devices and much more.

The MontaVista Linux platform supports high performance graphics, multimedia capability, internet connectivity via WiFi or 3G/4G, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, media and music management, contacts management, email and internet browser and GPS location aware services. Additionally, MontaVista Linux provides high quality, reliability and long support lifecycles with ongoing maintenance and updates for a decade or more. The MontaVista Linux platform is compliant with the GENIVI Compliance Specification version 1 draft.

Rightware's Kanzi UI Solution is targeted to solve the implementation and differentiation problems of today’s 3D user interfaces and enable rapid design, development, testing and deployment of visually rich and intuitive 3D user interfaces in mobile, consumer and automotive devices.

At this week's Telematics Update 2011 in Detroit, MI, MontaVista is demonstrating a jointly developed solution on an automotive reference platform that showcases their joint capabilities and ease of integration with 3D automotive solutions, including instrument cluster and IVI capabilities. The demonstration combines performance-wise the best-in-class products – the Kanzi Engine for 3D user interface and the MontaVista Linux platform. The 3D UI demonstration, which is built using PC-based Kanzi Studio UI creation software, illustrates an advanced automotive IVI application that contains a highly sophisticated 3D user interface with more than 30,000 polygons. The demonstration runs on top of OpenGL ES 2.0, which is the only hard-requirement for Kanzi Engine technology.

"MontaVista has developed a unique expertise where we've combined our experience in the consumer electronics and mobile market, with our experience in the carrier market where high quality and long support cycles are demanded," says Dan Cauchy, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development. "Combine this with 3D UI solutions from our partner Rightware, and no other company can offer this level of functionality and experience for Linux-based solutions in automotive.”

“Vehicles are utilizing more and more sophisticated 3D user interfaces for in-vehicle infotainment systems and instrument clusters, and Rightware’s goal is to provide the best high-end 3D user interface solution for these systems and enable car manufacturers to deliver whole new, fantastic user experiences with their brands, powered by our Kanzi UI technology,” says Tero Sarkkinen, CEO of Rightware. “We’re very excited to announce this partnership with MontaVista as it enables our customers to get the access to the best of both – the most powerful 3D UI and a high quality and high performance Embedded Linux by MontaVista. Add to this the conversations around future requirements and improved integration and we have a unique feature rich solution for the industry.“
