MontaVista Linux Consumer Electronics Edition Adds Support for Intel’s Next Generation Wireless Processor

Combination of Linux and Intel® XScale® Technology Ideal for Mobile Phones, PDAs and Other Wireless Devices

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov. 4, 2003 — MontaVista Software Inc., the company powering the embedded revolution, today announced that MontaVista® Linux® Consumer Electronics Edition (CEE) now supports the recently unveiled next-generation Intel processor for wireless devices, code-named “Bulverde.”

The Bulverde processor is based on the Intel® XScale® technology and is designed for advanced wireless and connected devices, such as full-featured mobile phones and PDAs. The upcoming processor will add several new features that will enable wireless devices to capture high quality still and video pictures through Intel® Quick Capture Technology, extend battery life with Wireless Intel® SpeedStep™ Technology and deliver fast multimedia performance through Intel® Wireless MMX™ technology.

MontaVista Linux Consumer Electronics Edition 3.0 is the first commercial-quality Linux operating system and cross-development environment specifically designed for consumer electronics devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, digital televisions, set-top boxes, automotive telematics and portable media players. CEE is designed to address many of the requirements of mobile consumer electronics devices, specifically, reduced boot and shutdown times, improved real-time response, reduced ROM/RAM size utilization and efficient dynamic power management. Leading phone manufacturers such as Motorola have recently announced next generation handsets and development efforts based on MontaVista Linux.

“As mobile phone and wireless handheld device technologies continue to advance, users expect more functionality and an experience that exceeds simply placing calls or organizing information,” said Hans Geyer, Intel vice president, and general manager of its PCA Components Group. “The combination of CEE and Bulverde creates a powerful enabling platform for OEMs. Intel is pleased that MontaVista Linux Consumer Electronics Edition will be supporting the Bulverde processor.”

To facilitate the ongoing adoption of data services and applications, manufacturers of wireless consumer devices need underlying technology to deliver enhanced multimedia capabilities with lower power consumption. These embedded technologies must deliver high-performance, robust functionality and versatility, while meeting the small-size and low-power requirements of these portable, battery-operated products.

“Only a sophisticated embedded operating system and development environment such as MontaVista Linux Consumer Electronics Edition can take advantage of the powerful and highly integrated Bulverde platform,” said Kevin Morgan, vice president, Engineering, MontaVista Software. “At the same time, the combined hardware-software synergy offers low power consumption, reduced memory footprint and high integration with peripheral devices. The combination of CEE and Intel® XScale® technology empowers OEMs to accelerate their next-generation mobile devices to market.”
