MontaVista’s Next-Generation Carrier Grade Edition Delivers Market-Leading High Availability Virtualization Layer on OCTEON III Processors
San Jose, California, February 7, 2012 – MontaVista® Software, LLC, a leader in embedded Linux® commercialization and Linux-based frameworks, platforms, and services that enable the creation of commercial quality devices, today announced support for the new state-of-the art OCTEON® III MIPS64® family of 1 – 48 core multicore processors from Cavium, Inc. (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for networking, communications, and the digital home.
As a Cavium PACE (Partnership to Accelerate Customer End-solutions) member, MontaVista Software will enable its market-leading CGE and its virtualization layer and Bare Metal Engine environment for embedded devices improving application portability, resource management, and application performance on multicore processors.
Bare Metal Engine provides a light-weight, configurable run-time environment that delivers RTOS performance inside a Linux environment. Bare Metal Engine lets users create a dedicated environment to run user-space applications, providing bare-metal execution and performance all within a Linux environment. Bare Metal Engine provides multiple out of the box configurations, allowing users to choose their own unique balance between system-services and bare metal performance.

The OCTEON III family integrates 1 to 48 MIPS64 cores, at up to 2.5GHz, providing up to 120GHz of industry-leading 64 bit compute power per chip. Multiple chips can be combined into a single logical high-performance processor using Cavium’s innovative new chip interconnect architecture. All OCTEON III’s also incorporate new dedicated hardware engines to speed search, protocol parsing and traffic management as well as enhanced cryptography, compression and deep packet inspection engines.
